Port of Tallinn

What does your company do and what value do you create today?

Tallinn Port is the largest port company in Estonia, offering cargo and passenger transport services and engaging in real estate development in port areas. The company’s core business includes the development and management of infrastructure in cargo and passenger ports, passenger services, and real estate development. In addition, Tallinn Port is an important pillar of the Estonian economy and a carrier of the image of Estonia as a maritime nation, promoting international trade and tourism.

Sustainability is at the heart of the company’s value creation. Tallinn Port invests in the development of environmentally friendly and energy-efficient solutions, including the use of renewable energy, reducing the ecological footprint, and achieving climate neutrality goals by 2050. For example, the Old City Harbour cruise terminal uses seawater heating and solar panels. The company also contributes to the circular economy by increasing waste recycling and reducing the risks of marine pollution. In cooperation with local communities and partners, an attractive and sustainable urban environment is created, following the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the European Green Deal, and Estonia’s climate policy.

Tallinn Port’s goal is to be a reliable partner that supports economic growth, social well-being, and environmental protection.

What motivated you to join GreenDice?

Tallinn Port’s decision to join GreenDice stems from similar values and sustainability goals. It is important for the company to reduce the environmental impact of its operations. For example, the port occasionally has unused computers and other IT equipment that are still in working order but no longer meet security requirements or are morally obsolete. GreenDice offers solutions that extend the life cycle of these devices, directing them to responsible reuse and recycling, including social projects. GreenDice also allows you to track the journey of devices from their use to the recycling of materials.

Cooperation with GreenDice helps Tallinn Port fulfill its sustainability reporting obligation and strengthen its reputation as a responsible company, demonstrating its commitment to the green transition and social responsibility to both local communities and international partners.

Have you implemented green and circular economy principles in the company and how?

Tallinn Port has set ambitious goals for the development of environmentally friendly and sustainable operations. The company’s strategy covers a wide range of green and circular economy principles, the implementation of which contributes to both the preservation of the cleanliness of the Baltic Sea and the well-being of communities. One of Tallinn Port’s main goals is to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. To achieve this, the focus is on CO2 emission-free solutions, including shore power connections, which allow ships to reduce emissions and energy consumption while in port. To promote energy efficiency, renewable energy is used in the development of infrastructure, such as seawater heating and solar energy systems in the new Old City Harbour cruise terminal.

When implementing the principles of the circular economy, Tallinn Port pays great attention to waste recycling, aiming to direct 70% of ship waste to the circular economy. Waste management processes are designed to minimize marine pollution and increase the efficient use of resources. In addition, the port manages projects that support waste reduction and material reuse in port areas.

Why is it important for you to contribute primarily to the development of Estonia and other societies?

It is important for Tallinn Port to contribute to the development of Estonia and other societies because we are part of the community and society, and our activities directly and indirectly affect the economy, the environment, and the well-being of people. The role of the port as an international maritime gateway requires responsible action to promote economic growth, strengthen Estonia’s competitiveness in the world, and support local communities.

We also understand that sustainable development is an important feature of a forward-looking company. We invest in environmentally friendly solutions, innovation, and partnerships because we want to offer added value not only to our partners and customers, but also to Estonian society as a whole.
